Amici Ristorante Italiano Kona Now Offers Pizza

Amici Ristorante Italiano Kona

Pizza has been a staple of Italian cuisine since 1889 and continues to be a part of the country’s cuisine to this day. Few Italian restaurants neglect to put the food on their menu, as the food is chance to attract clientele of all kinds. That’s why Amici Ristorante Italiano Kona, Kona’s premiere location for authentic Italian food, now has added pizza to their already delicious and varied menu.
Starting in the late 1700s, pizza became a staple in the diets of the working poor in Naples, Greece. The food was easy and cheap to make and could be made into an appropriate meal for anytime of the day. The food remained a part of Greek poor’s diet until 1889. In that year, Italy’s then royal couple, King Umberto I and Queen Margherita, visited Naples.

As legend goes, King Umberto I and Queen Margherita were of their traditional diet of upper-crust French food. Despite the fact that pizza was typically food for the poor, the royal couple was so excited to try the unique food that they asked for a bulk order from a local pizzeria. The king and queen, of course, feel in love with the food and began a pizza craze within their own country. Instead of just the poor people of the country enjoying the cuisine, rich and poor alike indulged in the cheesy treat, earning Italy the title of the pizza capital of the world.
Soon, the craze began to spread across the world. Because people associated pizza with Italy, they began to crave for general authentic Italian food. Native Italians who had immigrated to different locations around the word were ready to fulfill people’s cravings. Within a few decades of pizza becoming a staple in the Italian diet, New York and other places with a high population of Italian immigrants hosted dozens of Italian restaurants – pizzerias or otherwise. Copycats began to popup, hoping to cash in on the booming profit of Italian food. Today, there are thousands of Italian restaurants in the world – some more authentic than others. Nonetheless, pizza propelled Italian food into the spotlight, giving millions of Italians the chance to share their love of their home-country’s food. Without pizza, places like Amici Ristorante Italiano Kona would be non-existent. Italian family-owned and chain restaurants across the world owe pizza a great deal.

The owner of Amici Italian Bar & Grill has relocated his restaurant from their Kainaliu location, adjacent to the Aloha Theatre, to the Old Industrial Area across the street from the West Hawaii Today newspaper offices.  Although the previous location of the restaurant was known as “Amici Italian Bar And Grill”  now it is known as “Amici Ristorante Italiano”   was a good one, the move was precipitated by the lack of consistency, and the owner’s personal loss of a close family member which called for a fresh start.  Fortunately for the loyal and hungry clientele of Amici, the relocation has not affected the quality of the Italian cuisine, to which the owner remains committed.

The food scene in West Hawaii was first introduced to the authentic Italian cuisine of Amici Ristorante Italiano Kona, from the home country of Chef Giovanni Saffioti, in 2012.  Together with his co-owner, Devon Drake, they have relocated the restaurant in an attempt to spread their culinary expertise further.  They have been open for a short while and their new establishment, which is in close proximity to most businesses located in the Old Industrial Area, that makes it easier to gain access to foot traffic.  There is plenty of parking space, and the new restaurant includes an outdoor dining area. This is a fresh start for the sixty year old Italian who was born in Genoa, a Mediterranean sea port in North West Italy.  The region is well known for excellent Italian cuisine, but especially for its famous pesto sauce.  Saffioti moved to Canada with his family in 1969, and his passion for cooking compelled him to travel frequently between Canada, Italy and America, to gain experience at various restaurants.  He has studied under many chefs and slowly worked his way up from being a busboy at the age of 15, to being a Chef in his own right in 1983.

Executive Chef Saffioti’s specialty is the great enjoyment he derives from crafting his own sauces.  He is proud of the fact that none of the sauces in the dishes served at his restaurant taste the same, as he says, each sauce should honor the unique ingredients in that particular dish.  He also likes to cook food that he himself would like to eat, which makes all his dishes taste sumptuous and flavorful.  Together with his professional and competent staff, they prepare exotic dishes such as:

A lot of thought was put into the creation of the atmosphere of the restaurant to portray a feeling of little Italy where dining becomes an experience of pure pleasure.  Plans for the future include a piano bar and light jazz to enhance the romantic, intimate atmosphere.

Kona Kohala Chamber Of Commerce Luncheon with Mayor Kenoi and Dept Heads

Kona Kohala Chamber Of Commerce Luncheon 2014

Amici Ristorante Italiano Owners With Mayor

We attended The Annual Focus Luncheon with Mayor Kenoi and his Cabinet Staff on February 27, 2014 at the King Kamehameha Hotel.   As usual the Mayor was his jovial joyful self cracking jokes and spreading his manao!   We were able to get a few pictures with him as you can see here.  The Mayor’s Cabinet Heads were all in attendance and we had questions and one of our questions was selected as time was limited.   However, we are still in hot pursuit of the truth and we will get it one way or another as we have been talking with the heads of these Depts and so this will be interesting to see what is going to happen.   Stay tuned…..  Regardless the food was good and the friends we made were very nice and will be stopping by Amici Ristorante Italiano as we gave out some business cards and networked a little bit.   We were glad that we were able to put names to faces and get our message to the decision makers Finally……

Amici Ristorante Italiano Mayors Luncheon Discussion

The Mayor and his Staff enjoyed answering some select questions as time was short but our question got asked!  So we are looking into researching to make sure that the answer does indeed match what is going on in reality.  Very interesting luncheon and very informative!

The Mayor is addressing some questions about the Planning and Building permit process.  This is the process that the Dept Head Duane Kanuha said is the way the process is suppose to work.
